HANNAH BORCZON

Dance is a Journey

Dance is my vehicle to bravery. The stage was the first place I was not afraid to fully express who I am. My work focuses on the physical embodiment of change and showing internal emotions outwardly; expressing the often unspoken. As a child with anxiety that was almost debilitating, dance was the one thing I had no fear of. At thirteen I would rather perform a solo in front of hundreds than order my own food at a restaurant or speak on the phone with someone I didn’t know. Dancing was where I felt I could speak the loudest and the most clearly, using my body to express the thoughts I couldn’t with my voice. As I grew older I was able to overcome my fears by thinking of every day life as a dance performance and every encounter that scared me as a new improvisational score.

I pull heavily from my modern and hip hop training to isolate moments in the body and accentuate emotional release within the bend of the pinky finger, the curl of the lip, or the arch of the back. I live to bounce between hard and soft, playing with duality and reveling in the otherness I can find inside of my own body and how that translates into the bodies of others. I create because creation is where my passion lives and I perform every piece as if it were going to be my last.

I thank Dance every day for being my strength. It has shaped me into the woman I am today and continues to teach me and keep me growing every day.
